Associate Professor of Counselor Education
Dr. Yvette Castillo is an Associate Professor & Chair of the Counselor Education MA Program at West Texas A&M. She was also the first Helen Piehl Professor of Education (2009-2012) for the College of Education & Social Sciences. Leading CACREP aligned programs in Clinical Mental Health Counseling (60 hours) and School Counseling (36 hours) alongside her colleagues is her passion.
Dr. Castillo teaches courses such as psychopharmacology, cross cultural counseling, group, diagnosis, human growth and development, play therapy, clinical skills lab, practicum, internship and counselor supervision. She advises and mentors beginning and graduating students who will seek licensure as either a Licensed Professional Counselor or Certified School Counselor post graduation.
WTAMU's counselor education program is located at the WT Amarillo Center on the 7th floor of the Chase building, downtown Amarillo. Special features include: the Social Sciences Training & Research Labratory (SSTRL) on the 11th floor, where students are trained and supervised in providing individual, group, couple, family and play therapy to the Panhandle community free of charge; the International Honor Society in Counseling, Chi Sigma Iota; two professional growth conferences a year (Roberson & Waugh) offered to students and professionals in the community for continuing education and to name another, the annual Dia de los Muertos Celebration of Life GALA.
