I accepted the position as NICHD Associate Director for Disease Prevention and Health Promotion in 2010. I had the privilege of serving with outstanding staff and leadership at NICHD/NIH to advance scientific opportunities related to two emerging areas: 1) household air pollution from indoor burning of biomass fuel or coal, an exposure that is highest for women and children, and accounts for nearly 4 million deaths each year and 2) Developmental Origin of Health and Disease, a hypothesis that focuses on the "first 1000 days" from conception to 2 years of infancy, as the key developmental window when nutritional or environmental factors increase risk for childhood and adult chronic disease.
