I am the founder of Weissman Legal Editing, LLC, which works with law firms of all sizes editing website content, newsletters, articles, blogs, e-blasts, and other marketing materials. Weissman Legal Editing also provides proofreading services for legal documents.
Prior to starting Weissman Legal Editing, I spent a 25-year professional career honing my legal editing and proofreading skills. I got my start editing legal articles as Executive Editor of the Michigan Law Review while attending law school at the University of Michigan. After graduating in December 1992, I practiced health care law at the Detroit firm of Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn LLP, where I was elected a partner. In my practice, I regularly edited associate attorneys' work and served for two years as editor of the firm's health law newsletter. I then headed the health care transactional practice at a small firm. I continued there to develop my expertise, editing content for the firm's website and newsletter.
I left the practice of law in 2002 and went into academia full time, first teaching legal writing and health care law at Ave Maria School of Law and then teaching legal writing, health care law, and law practice simulation courses at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law. During my academic career, I edited and provided written feedback on hundreds of student papers, including legal memoranda, client advice letters, district court and appellate court briefs, pleadings, contracts, and law review notes.
Now, I combine my editing expertise with my passion for clear, concise writing to help other attorneys communicate more effectively.
Assistant Professor
I taught a two-semester legal research and writing course to first-year law students. I also designed and taught a variety of health law courses, including survey, advanced topics, and practice simulation courses. During my academic career, I edited and provided written feedback on hundreds of student papers and edited course handouts for colleagues. I also served as editor of UDM's American Bar Association reaccreditation self-study, a several-hundred page document assessing all aspects of the school’s operations.
Director of Law Firm Program
I served as the first director of the school’s Law Firm Program. In this role, I worked with other full-time faculty members to design the curriculum for the innovative program in which third-year law students engaged in the simulated practice of law. I recruited and trained adjunct faculty to teach in the program, co-created and co-taught the program’s pilot course, and created and taught the program’s transactional health law simulation course.
Lecturer
I taught a year-long legal research, writing, and advocacy course to first-year law students.
Adjunct Professor
I taught a health law survey course in which students examined laws and regulations governing the American health care industry.
Founder and Editor
I work with law firms of all sizes editing website content, newsletters, articles, blogs, e-blasts, and other marketing materials. As a lawyer who has practiced in both large and small firms, I fully understand the pressures of billable hours. I likewise know that billable hours will not come your way unless you spend considerable non-billable time marketing your services. Let me take some of the non-billable stress off of you so you can get back to what you are paid to do. While you service your clients, I will put my 25 years of editing and proofreading experience to work, making your website content and marketing materials stand out from the competition.
I also provide proofreading services for legal documents. Let me catch writing errors before a judge or client does.
Attorney
I headed the firm’s health care transactional practice and edited content for the firm’s website and newsletter.
Educational Program Coordinator
I edited content for the organization's website and oversaw youth educational programming.
