My dissertation research focuses on conflicts over water in the southern Ecuadorian Andes. I conducted 29 months of ethnographic field work among a group of small and medium sized dairy farmers who have mobilized in opposition to the construction of a gold mine. Concerns over the possible effects of mining development on rural watersheds brought together farmers
social Catholics
environmentalists
scientists
and student activists into a new and unlikely coalition for nature rights. My research uncovers the ways in which political mobilization coincides with shifts in the cultural and political meaning of water and unsettles orthodox views that separate nature from culture. \n\nMy research interests include environmental politics
corporate social responsibility
knowledge production
race/ethnicity
gender and feminism
social movements
and the state.
