  • Environmental Goods Trade and CO2 emission: A panel data estimation

    Conference Paper, Southern Economic Association

Sustainable Development is the prime concern in development policy making all around the world. Environmental goods and Services (EGS) play a vital role in sustainable development. Increasing access to and use of EGS can help in reducing air and water-pollution, improving energy and resource-efficiency and facilitating solid waste disposal. Trade liberalization of environmental goods help promote sustainable economic development by generating economic growth and employment and enabling the transfer of valuable skills, technology and knowhow embedded in such goods and services. This paper focuses on the impact of environmental goods imports on the environment and on the importance of liberalizing trade in environmental goods and services in the context of Bangladesh. The Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) along with some other factors as control variables is used to analyze the effect on air pollution of the changes in the share of environmental goods in total imports. This is examined using panel data econometric approach for 72 Countries for the years 1995-2010. Westerlund Error Correction Model panel Cointegration tests are also carried out. The findings show that an increase in imports of EGS reduces air pollution.

  • Native-Immigrant Wage differential in US Labor Market: A Comparative Assessment

    Under Review

Since 1960, the United States has experienced positive inflow of immigrants. Overtime this pattern has changed significantly, according to census 2000, only 13.6 percent of adult immigrants in the US were born in Europe, while 32 percent were born in Mexico, 16 percent in Central America or the Caribbean and 26.6 percent from Asia. It is now over 1 million people who immigrate to the U.S. each year (both legally and illegally). There are a number of research studies on different economic dimensions on determination of migration inflow, adaptation and assimilation, to labor market consequences. There are also some evidences that suggest the presence of labor market discrimination in terms of wage against immigrant people. Some argued that there is significant difference in native-immigrants wage structure, while; some argued that there is no difference at all. However, the measured impact of immigration on the wage of native workers fluctuates widely from study to study and sometimes even within the study. This study aims to investigate such differential effect of wage between native people and immigrant people if it exists. In addition, it endeavors to search the factors that lead to wage discrimination in comparing the assimilation pattern among immigrants. In this paper, a simple wage equation has been used to determine the impact of discrimination on wages between two groups (native and immigrant). The paper aims therefore to test whether foreign immigrants perform differently from local workers, thereby contribute to better understanding of the role of other factors such as age, sex, race, education, region, years of living in US, marital status and English language proficiency.

  • Remittance and Poverty in Bangladesh: Some Econometric Exercises

    Bangladesh Economic Outlook

International remittance is an important source of foreign exchange income for the developing countries including Bangladesh. Remittance plays a critical role in providing the foreign currency and financing the trade deficit of Bangladesh. Using HIES, 2005, to have a more systematic analysis we have run a number of cross-section regressions considering different types of expenditures. The analyses in this paper clearly suggest that remittance plays a very important role in Bangladesh with regard to macroeconomic stability, aggregate demand, household well being measured by consumption level and their poverty incidence.

  • Ethnic Networks, Risk Attitudes and Migration Decisions

    Working Paper

his paper examines the relationship between individuals' migration decisions and risk attitudes. We use the Two-Sample Two-Stage Instrumental Variable (TS2SIV) technique to measure relative risk aversion and its impact on migration. Using the probit model, we find that more risk-averse people are less likely to migrate. The results also indicate that the impact of risk attitudes on migration varies by other demographic characteristics such as age, sex, etc. In addition, we test whether there is any network effect on migration and how risk attitudes vary with the network effect. We consider two ethnic groups; Asian and Hispanic, and find that the size of one's own ethnic group in a source location has a significant effect on the migration decisions. In addition, we also find that risk attitudes vary with the network effect.

  • Employment Effects of Different Development Policy Instruments: Bangladesh Country Paper

    R4D Working Paper 2015/5

The developments in labor market lie at the heart of Bangladesh’s on-going structural transformation processes having significant bearings on agricultural productivity, and farm and non-farm sectoral linkages and thus eventually overall growth and poverty alleviation prospects. Bangladesh has its basic comparative advantage in terms of endless supply of unskilled cheap labor, but it failed to ensure sufficient remunerative employment generation. Traditional sectors can’t provide good remunerative employment to the new entrants in the labor force. Besides, modern industrial sectors are flourishing slowly and should be designed in a pro-poor labor intensive nature. Despite higher economic growth, employment grew at a relatively slow rate since the 1990s. At the aggregate level, agriculture is still the largest sector of employment. With the labor force growing faster than the employment potential, the number of unemployed persons increased over time. Against these backdrops, this paper provides an overview of the Bangladesh economy, development strategies, trade policies, labor market and associated dynamics and political economic issues.
