The Limits of Language: Digital technologies and new methodologies for global media research
heidi campbell
This article argues that data-driven research in global media has not kept up\nwith the inherent interest in internationalization due to a number of factors
\nincluding access to global media and the lack of foreign language skills among\nmany media researchers. Thus
the field still remains focused on analysis of\nWestern media
leading to misunderstanding the geopolitical impact of global\nmedia. The article explores emerging media monitoring technologies which\nhave arisen out of developments in natural language processing and machine\ngenerated translation. Finally
the article explores innovative research programs\nthat utilize these technologies for global media research and education.
The Limits of Language: Digital technologies and new methodologies for global media research
Two of the largest Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) organizations have chosen\ndifferent methods for the way they will score and provide feedback on essays\nstudents submit. EdX
MIT and Harvard’s non-profit MOOC federation
recently\nannounced that they will use a machine-based Automated Essay Scoring (AES)\napplication to assess written work in their MOOCs. Coursera
a Stanford startup\nfor MOOCs
has been skeptical of AES applications and therefore has held that it\nwill use some form of human-based “calibrated peer review” to score and provide\nfeedback on student writing. This essay reviews the relevant literature on AES and\nUCLA’s Calibrated Peer Review™ (CPR) product at a high level
outlines the capabilities\nand limitations of both AES and CPR
and provides a table and framework\nfor comparing these forms of assessment of student writing in MOOCs.
