Crisis Intervention Teams (CIT) in the U.S. and Mental Health Intervention Teams (MHIT) in Australia provide training to law enforcement in order to prepare them to effectively respond to mental health emergencies. Training for call-takers and dispatchers has been an under-researched and under-trained population in CIT and MHIT. This study
for the fulfillment of a dissertation
will measure the effects of CIT/MHIT training specific to call-takers and dispatchers in both Virginia (U.S.) and New South Wales (Australia) on attitudes and social distance regarding mental illness and persons with mental illness.
RiCharde
I began practicing mental health and substance abuse counseling during my clinical internship in 2007. I worked at Rockbridge Area Community Services for five years
serving in two positions during that time. I am a founding member of the Rockbridge-Bath Crisis Intervention Team (CIT)
training law enforcement and communications officers about effective response to mental health emergencies. For a year and a half
I worked in part-time private practice
providing clinical mental health counseling to children
adults
and couples. In 2016
I left clinical work in order to complete a year of service as an AmeriCorps*VISTA at the Campus Kitchen at Washington & Lee University. I graduated with a PhD in International Psychology with a concentration in Trauma in October 2016. I have worked as an adjunct faculty member teaching courses in psychology at Virginia Military Institute and at Dabney S. Lancaster Community College. Currently
I am Assistant Professor of Psychological Sciences at the University of Lynchburg and Adjunct Faculty at Southern Virginia University. My area of research and social justice interest is in stigma reduction
particularly the stigma associated with mental illness.
