I am a historian of the United States with teaching and research specializations in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, African-American history, black women’s history, civil rights history, African-American religious history, black Catholic history, and feminist and womanist thought.
I am working on the manuscript for my first book, "Subversive Habits: The Untold Story of Black Catholic Nuns in the United States." My study unearths the hidden history of this largely forgotten group of black churchwomen. It also turns critical attention to the long black freedom struggle within Catholic boundaries and the radical dimensions of black female celibacy.
I frequently lecture on the long and rich history of black Catholic nuns in the Atlantic world. Requests for speaking and media engagements should be made to: shannen.williams@villanova.edu
