HISTORY

Kallipolis was conceived and founded in the spring of 2005 in response to impending social upheavals and crises caused by convergent economic, social, and environmental collapses. Its members believe that the declining availability of conventional energy sources and changing climate patterns will eventually necessitate a loose federation of rural, self-sufficient societies, each populated by thirty to forty members. We think that each community will be forced to generate its own power, grow its own food, develop its own transportation, and establish its own principles of governance. We further think that social life is meaningful only insofar as it centers on artistic and intellectual creativity, rather than on work and the dehumanizing entrapments of consumerist, urban mass culture. Hence we aim to construct a remote model community, completely self-provisioning and self-regulating, in which artistic and philosophical pursuits are the foundation of focused social interaction. All decisions, policies, and procedures in this community will be adopted on the basis of communal negotiation and unanimous consent.

We envision a period of what we call "transitional symbiosis" in which technological and economic resources are deployed from within the existing capitalist, materialist society as tools for disengagement from that society. For example, we do not hesitate to use available wind and solar technologies as platforms for energy self-sufficiency. Similarly, we will use money to buy our way out of the cash and credit-based economy into a barter-based economy.

Kallipolis's founder is Dr. Sean O'Connell, who for many years taught Philosophy at MacEwan University in Edmonton. Dr. O'Connell has also had careers in broadcast journalism, counseling psychology, public relations, and acting. He is the author of seven published books, including his most recent novel Gemini 2.
