Saint Louis, Missouri
I am currently an Assistant Professor of Biology, teaching many courses in the biology sequence for both majors and non-majors. I also enjoy collaborating with colleagues in my department and other disciplines, including political science and communication. I also conduct undergraduate research in the areas of conservation biology, genetics, evolution, and plant ecology, and supervise honors projects.
I have previously worked as a program coordinator to train students to be entry level lab technicians in bioscience industry. As program coordinator, I improved job placement rates from 0% to 87% in four years, and increased the percentage of students continuing to an associates or bachelors degree from 40% to 77%, also in four years.
My doctorate is in Plant Biology, with emphasis in ecology, genetics, evolution and physiological ecology. My specialties include ecological and evolutionary plant research, plant ecophysiological techniques, use of gas exchange equipment, population genetics, statistics and experimental design, and teaching science to undergraduate (majors and non-majors) and non-traditional students.
Graduate Research and Teaching Assistant
Assisting my advisor, Dr. Lisa A. Donovan, with her research project on artificial selection of desert sunflower species for the research assistantship. Also, I was responsible for designing and completing my dissertation research: investigating the potential for adaptive differentiation in a granite outcrop annual sunflower. Teaching Assistantship for "Life & Earth Science lab for Early Childhood Education Majors" Jan. 2009-May 2009, "Plant Biology lab for Non-Majors" Aug. 2009-Dec. 2009, and "Plant Physiological Ecology Lab" graduate students only Jan. 2010-May 2010.
Assistant Professor
I taught courses face-to-face and online in the School for Professional studies. These courses include introduction to cell biology and genetics, introduction to ecology and evolutionary biology, introductory biology, ecology, and human health and disease.
I also served on numerous committees including retention committee, curriculum committee, core curriculum task force, and a search committee for an open position. I also served as a faculty advisor for the campus student organization, Alpha Phi Omega.
As Section 49 Chair for Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity, I guide and assist 10 chapters in and around east central Missouri and southwest Illinois, including the St. Louis metro area. I also chair a staff of 5 members, which specialize in various areas such as scouting or membership, to additional assist the students members of the fraternity at the 10 chapters. As part of publicity for the section, I oversee a Facebook page and Section 49 website.
Faculty Coordinator of the Emerson STEM Academy
I worked with administrators and staff of St. Louis Community College to build relationships with North County high schools and ensure high school juniors and seniors enroll and are successful in dual credit and dual enrollment courses at the Florissant Valley campus. I employed intrusive advising and retention strategies and worked closely with the enrolled high school students to help them succeed in their coursework.
Associate Professor Of Biology
I teach courses in biology including Principles of Biology I and II (majors), Genetics (Majors), Non-Majors Biology, and General Botany. I also conduct undergraduate research in plant ecophysiology, evolution, genetics, and conservation. I also serve on numerous committees throughout the district and have a history serving on governance as a faculty representative. My current aspirations involve collaborating with local and state organizations on plant conservation efforts.
Crop Transformation Intern/Technician
Assisted in research to improve transformation in cotton. I worked independently, by assisting a lead scientist in Monsanto. I kept a lab notebook observing proper GLP and GMP standards. I gained substantial experience in plant tissue culture, plant media preparation, and greenhouse and growth chamber use. I also gave a presentation on my project and results at the end of my internship in front of a panel of other scientists involved in the intern program.
