Sandie Crawford began her career over 25 years ago working at Cleveland State University writing grants focusing on intervention strategies designed to decrease the college drop-out rate among students of color. Crawford then went on to Cuyahoga Community College where, over her 17-year tenure, she served as the assistant director, interim dean and assistant dean for developmental education and learning services. Sandie also has a teaching and advising background, having taught “College Survival Strategies” and life skills, personal developmental, career exploration and professional communication and presentation courses.
Crawford joined the management team of Summit College at The University of Akron as Director of Developmental Programs in January 2009. She brings a broad experience working with at-risk, underprepared and diverse student populations in postsecondary institutions. Sandie possess extensive expertise in the areas of student retention, career and college readiness, developmental education and learning assistance, curriculum and instruction, workforce development and student outcomes assessment and evaluation.
Crawford is a Quality Matters certified peer reviewer with online course design and teaching experience. Her dissertation research explored technology acceptance and self-regulated learning in a computer-assisted learning environment.
In 2004, Crawford was selected to participate in the prestigious and nationally recognized Kellogg Institute at Appalachian State University, where she earned a graduate certificate as a developmental education specialist.
Sandie received her Ed.D. in Educational Leadership from Grambling State University with a major concentration in developmental education curriculum and instructional design, M.Ed. specializing in adult learning and development, and B.A. in organizational communications, with minors in history and black studies from Cleveland State University.
Assistant to the Dean for Retention Initiatives
• Provide college-wide leadership and strategic direction in the development of a retention effectiveness model by promoting collaboration, communication and accountability among Summit College faculty and staff and other university colleges.
• Conduct retention needs assessment and outcomes assessment for programs, policies, procedures, services and develop intervention strategies as appropriate.
• Conduct retention research and best practices to establish persistence and retention benchmarks.
• Facilitate and coordinate continuous quality improvement relative to retention initiatives.
• Develop tracking and monitoring mechanisms for learning needs, academic performance and retention of Summit College students.
• Collaborate with department chairs and faculty on ways to infuse retention strategies in curriculum review, development and instructional design.
• Appointed to serve as a member of the University’s Diversity Council and promote the tenets of inclusive excellence.
Director, Developmental Programs
• Served as department chair providing leadership for an academic department offering courses in writing, mathematics, reading and study skills; and implementing a comprehensive program of instructional support services designed to help students achieve academic success in college.
• Provided direct supervision for fourteen (14) full-time faculty, (50) adjunct faculty, one (1) coordinator for tutorial services and one (1) supervisor for developmental programs support.
• Administered department budget, monitor and analyze faculty workloads, oversee strategic planning initiatives.
• Initiated, facilitated and provided oversight for department-wide programs and curriculum development.
• Responsible for hiring, scheduling and evaluating faculty, delivered faculty development workshops, and facilitated reappointment, promotion and tenure process.
• Taught student success seminar course as part of a learning community.
• Conducted follow-up studies and departmental research.
• Served as program coordinator for the Connect2Complete (C2C): Peer Mentoring and Community Engagement Program.
Interim Dean
• Provided college-wide leadership and coordination of the College’s Developmental Education program with respect to all academic support services including, but not limited to tutoring, assessment, in-class assistance, and on-line resources with targeted emphasis on developmental English and mathematic courses.
• Ensured that the developmental curriculum is designed to promote student retention, strengthen the skills of developmental students, and adequately prepare them for college-level study.
• Collaborated with the Office of Faculty Development in the development of staff development seminars, workshops and guest speakers to enhance faculty expertise in Developmental Education.
• Recommended and collaborated with faculty and other departments in the design and implementation of Achieving the Dream and Academic Quality Improvement Program.
• Led the development of program strategic plans, priorities, policies and future projects and directions with respect to assessment and Developmental Education.
• Provided leadership for program evaluation and outcomes assessment.
• Provided leadership in identifying and responding to community needs that fit the College’s mission and goals.
Assistant Dean, Office of Student Success
• Supported the Vice President, Student Success in coordinating and promoting the major initiatives in the areas of developmental education and learning services at all three (3) College campuses.
• Supervised campus directors of developmental education, assessment and testing, and department support staff.
• Had college-wide responsibility for budget oversight, planning, allocation and monitoring for Learning Center operations at all three (3) campuses.
• Supported and implemented strategic collaborations with Academic and Student Affairs units on each campus and/or college-wide to improve academic support services for students.
• Supported the collaborative work of the Office of Student Success to engage English and mathematics faculty in the creation of innovative curriculum and delivery approaches for developmental education courses.
• Served as a member of campus and college leadership teams, such as college-wide executive cabinet, college-wide deans’ council and academic deans’ council.
• Researched and implemented techniques to shorten students’ tenure in developmental studies.
• Served as a program advocate and representative internally and externally.
