Having pursued dual interests in the performing & literary arts and computing in many settings, the 2015 publication of my book FIRST IN THE FIELD: BREAKING GROUND IN COMPUTER SCIENCE AT PURDUE UNIVERSITY has brought me full circle. The research and writing of this book was inspired by the work of my father, L. Duane Pyle, (one of the original founders of the first department of computer science in America), who had compiled the only surviving documentation of the events leading up to this amazing accomplishment. It was in bringing to light the significance of the documents he had kept, the fascinating stories behind the people involved, and the long ignored archival photos of early computing work at Purdue that I felt truly able to integrate my skills in dramatic storytelling.
In order to tell this story, I was fortunate to have had a background in both early computer programming and dramatic writing, as this little known tale is filled with elements of tragic-comedy, and even mystery. Having completed this book, I feel compelled to extend my lifelong practice of telling stories through live performance to include the world wide web, with the full knowledge that my father's early work attempting to transmit data through telephone lines in 1961 set one of the earliest precedents for envisioning what communication has come to mean for us today.
Needless to say, I am in the planning stages of building a website....
