Working with Maxim Pospelov, we examined the impact a missing resonance in a reaction cross section had on Big Bang Nucleosynthesis predictions. We found that if a resonance at 200 keV above threshold was strong enough in the Be7(d,pa)He4 reaction, we could alleviate the tension between Li7 abundance predictions and observations. Subsequent experimental explorations show that the deuteron width is weak, ruling out this nuclear physics fix to the Li7 problem.
Adjunct Instructor of Astronomy & Physics
Richard worked at Lansing Community College as a Adjunct Instructor of Astronomy & Physics
Visiting Assistant Professor
I manage the Joint Institute for Nuclear Astrophysics (JINA) databases, REACLIB NucDataLib and Virtual Journal. All of these are ultimately part of the larger scheme of JINA libraries (e.g. JINALIB). I also maintain active research in nuclear and particle astrophysics, including Big Bang Nucleosynthesis, Type I X-ray bursts and studies of the Rapid Neutron Capture process (e.g. r-process). As part of my position I also perform community outreach.
Assistant Professor of Physics
I teach the algebra-based Introductory and Intermediate Physics course and rotate through the 4 upper-level courses, Digital Electronics, Astrophysics and Cosmology, Computational Physics, and Optics. I also maintain a research program in astrophysics and cosmology working with interested undergraduates.
