2003\n\nAlan R. Kluver is the recipient of the Walter Benjamin Award for Outstanding Article in the Field of Media Ecology. The Media Ecology Association (MEA) announced the award at its fourth annual convention in Hampstead
New York
on June 5-8. \n\nKluver was selected for his article \"The Logic of New Media in International Affairs
\" published in the December
2002 issue of New Media and Society. In the piece
Kluver argues that foreign policy is constrained by public opinion
which is in turn affected by media portrayals of other nations. Further
the article proposes a conceptual scheme and criterion for determining the impact of media format in presenting international issues. \n\nThe Walter Benjamin Award is named after Walter Benjamin
a German literary and social critic who made seminal contributions to the humanities.

1999 Outstanding Book Award
Randy Kluver and John Powers are the recipients of the Outstanding Book Award of the International and Intercultural Division (IICD) of the National Communication Association. The IICD announced the award at its annual convention in Seattle
Washington
on November 10
2000. \n\nKluver and Power's book
Civic Discourse
Civil Society
and Chinese Communities was selected for the Outstanding Book Award
for books published in 1999. In the book
Kluver and Powers argue that civil society is formed through discourse-that is
it is through a group's discursive practices that the society \"discovers\" itself and formulates its values
character
and ultimately
its ethos. The volume contains essays by a number of scholars exploring this essential conviction in a variety of contexts. \n\nThe International and Intercultural Communication Division (IICD) promotes research and teaching in intercultural
international
and intergroup communication. \nRandy Kluver is an Associate Professor at Oklahoma City University
and John Powers is Professor at Hong Kong Baptist University.

How media outlets from around the world are reacting to the presidential campaign
hen Donald Trump repeatedly claims the election is “rigged
” it doesn’t just undermine voter confidence at home. It can also hurt the country’s standing around the world
where people have been closely following the presidential race. Because of the United States’ predominant role in geopolitics and global economics
foreign governments and their citizens scrutinize the candidates and their positions
which can hint at future American policies. The campaign also acts as a snapshot of American democracy. In order to assess what the world has been thinking about the ongoing election
we’ve been tracking global media coverage via 60 different news outlets in regions that represent over 1.5 billion people. Using the Media Monitoring System
which captures and translates foreign language content
we’re able to harvest large amounts of news media from multiple languages and read machine-generated translations.

The internet is developing quicker in Asia than in any other region of the world. This book is the first comprehensive analysis of the information society in an Asian context
and the impact of these technologies in Asia. These impacts are inevitably uneven and conditioned by issues of telecommunications infrastructure
government policies
cultural and social values
and economic realities. The combination of original research
theoretical innovation and detailed case studies make this an important book for scholars and students in Asian studies
media studies
communication studies and sociology.
Asia.com: Asia Encounters the Internet
This article argues that data-driven research in global media has not kept up\nwith the inherent interest in internationalization due to a number of factors
\nincluding access to global media and the lack of foreign language skills among\nmany media researchers. Thus
the field still remains focused on analysis of\nWestern media
leading to misunderstanding the geopolitical impact of global\nmedia. The article explores emerging media monitoring technologies which\nhave arisen out of developments in natural language processing and machine\ngenerated translation. Finally
the article explores innovative research programs\nthat utilize these technologies for global media research and education.

The purpose of this volume is to bring together a set of chapters that investigate the communication practices through which Chinese societies are creating their civil foundations for the next millennium. Civic Discourse
Civil Society
and Chinese Communities
reflects both the emphasis on analyzing specific discursive practices in particular Chinese societies and on understanding the role that discursive practices play in the development of civil society more generally.

In 2003
I formed a collaborative effort with other international scholars to develop the “International Internet and Elections Project
” which grew from a handful of scholars to a group of 30 academics from 21 nations. This work was published in 2007 as the first comparative analysis of the political use of the Internet
and has since widely become recognized as the first and to my knowledge
only
comparative analysis of the internet’s political impact across national boundaries that employed a common conceptual framework and methodology.
The Internet and National Elections: a comparative study of web campaigning
The reform program of Deng Xiaoping in the People's Republic of China constitutes one of the most significant political and social change programs in recent history. A singularly important question arises from this experiment: How does a nation implement a stock market and call it Marxism? This book answers this question by examining the official discourse bridging the gap between the reform policies and orthodox Marxism. Focusing on Chinese Communist Party Congresses and the Resolution on CPC History
the author extends recent writings on the reforms by analyzing the ways in which the Chinese leadership justified the reforms
in the face of social and economic turmoil
such as the 1989 Tiananmen Square movement.
