The book consists of two parts
a theoretical and an empirical section. In the theoretical section the reader is thoroughly introduced to the wide field of aphasia research from its humble beginnings to the present. Different causes of aphasia are described and illustrated in detail. In addition
different aphasia subtypes are outlined and historical
neuroanatomical
and linguistic information
is provided. Another section is devoted to the field of gesture research. The approaches of the most important gesture researchers are introduced
compared
as well as critically committed on. A last chapter is dedicated to the study of gestural use of aphasic populations. Finally
the empirical part of this publication assesses the gestural behavior of aphasic patients and neurologically unimpaired control subject in a series of linguistic tests.
Gesture and Aphasia
For the last ten years I have taught a variety of classes in linguistics
such as Introduction to Linguistics
The History of the English Language
Psycholinguistics - Language and the Mind
Sociolinguistics - Language in Society
Introduction to Language Acquisition
The Nature of Language
as well as beginning and intermediate German.\nBesides linguistics and linguistic research
I have always had a passion for teaching and have spent a considerable amount of time in classrooms teaching almost all levels from elementary school to university. Based on my belief that a classroom should be a place where student interaction
exchange
and critical thinking are fostered
my teaching method is one that focuses on dialogue rather than on frontal teaching. By creating a productive learning environment
I have been able to spark my students’ interest in linguistics and to turn a large number of them into enthusiastic prospective linguists transferring to top linguistics programs at schools such as Stanford
UCLA
Berkeley
UC Santa Cruz
Boston University
etc.\nFinally
my scholarly interests focus mainly on psycholinguistics
neurolinguistics
and basic linguistic theory. I have had the honor to be part of a large European Union Grant project on voice and depression
whose goal it was to detect and monitor depression by means of spectral voice analysis. \nPrevious research projects of mine included the linguistic analysis of the language of psychiatric patients
syntactic complexity of the language of people suffering from schizophrenia
and the gestural behavior of aphasic patients.\n
