Book Review: Child-sized history: Fictions of the past in U.S. classrooms
Historical novels
such as Sounder
Island of the Blue Dolphins
Indian in the Cupboard
My Brother Sam is Dead
and The Witch of Blackbird Pond play an important role in middle school social studies curriculum today. These novels bring the past to life for modern students who may have a hard time imagining the American Revolution
American expansion to the West
or slavery. Schwebel in her book Child-sized history: Fictions of the past in U.S. classrooms (2011) argues that historical novels are an important element in social studies curriculum
but these novels continue to marginalize people of color and perpetuate the overly celebratory American narrative. She cautions teachers to become more critical in choosing and using historical novels in their curricula
and throughout the book models for teachers how novels should be critiqued. Schwebel’s book is well organized and accessible for teachers who are interested in improving their use of the historical novel while increasing students’ historical thinking
reading and writing skills.
