Landed several publications of poetry, interviews, and essays on the pedagogy of writing. Received the highest award for M.F.A. Thesis Manuscript, 2013.
The Harris-Kunz Prize for Poetry Award
The Journey of Lil Stick and His Stick Family is Patrick Lee Clark's M.F.A. thesis book. Selected by the NMSU Creative Writing Poetry faculty, readers are moved by Patrick's unique and fabulist handling of the African American diaspora in a wild variety of genres. The figure of "Lil Stick" as the result of that violent and bluesy history was utterly original.

Shane McCrae is an American poet. He is the author of the poetry collection Mule (Cleveland State University Poetry Center 2011)and the recipient of a 2011 Whiting Writers’ Award. In 2012, McCrae’s collection Mule was selected as a finalist for the Kate Tufts Discovery Award. His poems have appeared in numerous journals and anthologies, including Best American Poetry 2010, American Poetry Review, African American Review, Fence, and AGNI. McCrae attended University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop, Harvard Law School and is currently a PhD student in English at the University of Iowa. Below, he talks with poet and MFA candidate Patrick Lee Clark about musical influences in poetry, the importance of reading for developing voice, and Will Smith.
