SA\n\nThe NFL’s recent discussion of sickle cell and diabetes offers a unique platform for presenting viewers with health information. Therefore
we aim to address the accuracy of the information presented and identify the motive for discussing these chronic diseases. Therefore
we test our research questions by conducting a content analysis of articles from that discuss current players with sickle cell and diabetes. We found most of the articles presented accurate health information
and that treatment was frequently administered for the individual player’s health. In sum
this study demonstrates the opportunity the League has for providing health information to minority populations.

The Deaf in Media: An Examination of How the Deaf are Represented in Primetime Television Shows in the United States
Presented at the 2016 National Communication Association Conference
Philadelphia
PA\n\nUsing Clark’s (1969) evolutionary stages of minorities in mass media framework and the National Association of the Deaf’s guidelines for those in media professions
I aim to examine how Deaf characters are portrayed and developed in primetime television shows in the United States and how firmly people in the media industry adhere to the NAD’s guidelines. Specifically
I analyze four Deaf character’s biographies and episode summaries from 7th Heaven
Weeds
and Switched at Birth using a coding matrix. Early results indicate the characters from 7th Heaven and Weeds begin in the ridicule stage and move slightly towards the regulation stage while the two Deaf characters from Switched at Birth beginning and remaining in the respect stage. Additionally
results also show two of the three NAD guidelines being adhered to pretty consistently with a lack of diversity still not being addressed. Finally
it is possible that with the rise of Nyle DiMarco there may be continued evolution through the stages and more consistent adherence to the guidelines.
