Bryan/College Station, Texas Area
I am a University Distinguished Professor of Texas A&M University, Regents Professor of the Texas A&M University System, and hold the Mitchell/Heep/Munnerlyn Chair in Observational Astronomy in the Department of Physics and Astronomy and the Mitchell Institute for Fundamental Physics and Astronomy. I founded the Astronomy Group at A&M in 2006 inside the Physics Department. Previously I was Associate Director of Science for the US National Optical Observatory and stationed in La Serena Chile for over 20 years.
My academic goal at A&M is to create a world-class program in astronomy & astrophysics, concentrating on astronomical instrumentation, the construction of large telescopes, extragalactic astrophysics, astrostatistics, and exobiology.
My scientific goals are to continue to study cosmology and the nature of dark energy and dark matter. I co-founded the High-Z Supernova Team which in 1998 announced the discovery that the expansion of the Universe was in acceleration, revealing for the first time 70% of the mass/energy of the entire Universe that had never been detected before. This science was recognized with the Nobel Prize in Physics 2011. I also work in the fields of supernova physics, stellar populations, astronomical instrumentation, and stellar abundances.
I have extensive experience in the management of astronomical projects and research scientists. I am a past Councilor and Vice President to the American Astronomical Society. I am on the boards of Brazos Valley Museum of Natural History, the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope, and AdventGX Inc. I was a Jefferson Senior Science Advisor to the Department of State, in the Office Human Rights as a Humanitarian Affairs Officer.
Specialties: scientific project management, science policy, academic administration, scientific issues of humanitarian affairs, scientific research in cosmology.
