  • Library and Archives Canada

    Reference Librarian

    - responded to queries from the public and other government departments, in person and by email, using a vast collection of published and archival materials, including government information, legislation, maps, photographs, newspapers, and city directories, in print and digital formats
    - guided onsite and offsite users in searching the library catalogue (AMICUS) and multiple archival databases, and explained retrieval, consultation, and reproduction procedures
    - investigated the use of VoIP in reference services, produced a report for managers, and collaborated with the project team to set parameters for this new service model
    - created illustrated tip sheets and set of Skype Quick Reference Cards, and led practice sessions to assist colleagues with the transition to new computers, applications, and service model
    - created wiki research guides on Sessional Papers, the Census, Canadian statistics, and parliamentary debates
    - evaluated electronic resources at major Canadian public libraries, obtained quotes and negotiated discounts with product vendors, and submitted a proposal for a $100,000-purchase of online research tools as part of a team project
    - contributed a blog posts about searching LAC’s extensive collection of newspapers on microfilm and the significance of this resource

    Reference Collection Intern (Professional Practicum)

    - conducted a literature review on the use of reference titles in small academic libraries, and recommended eliminating Laidlaw’s separate non-circulating print reference collection
    - set criteria for weeding and transfer, and developed an implementation plan for the interfiling of the reference collection with circulating materials
    - evaluated over 1,000 items for withdrawal or shifting, and recommended new titles for purchase to support the college’s Health Studies program

    - secured funding and act as responsible officer of a research support project to provide access to commercial research databases for IDRC-funded partners
    - assigned keywords, sector codes and policy markers to IDRC projects
    - supported IDRC's move to Open Access by providing advice on article processing charges (APCs), journal self-archiving policies, and predatory publishers
