Marietta, Ohio
I am an artist and educator with over fifteen years of experience successfully teaching students from diverse academic, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds. Currently I am teaching Drawing, Art Appreciation, and Modern Art, and more both face to face and online, at West Virginia University at Parkersburg. My goal is to turn the classroom into a dynamic place for discovery and exploration. For me teaching is more than just a profession, it is a calling, and education can be a powerful tool to transform the lives of individuals and society.

    • Remembering the forgotten

      Savannah Morning News

In her latest exhibit "Forgotten Territory," Savannah artist Monica Lynn James pays tribute to the slaves who were once bought and sold at Shockoe Bottom in Richmond, Va., one of the largest slave markets in the United States. The series of 11 thoughtful mixed media paintings is on display at the Savannah College of Art and Design's Pinnacle Gallery through the end of February. Today, little evidence of Richmond's slave trade remains; a parking lot covers the site of a historic slave burial ground. James felt compelled to travel to Virginia to begin the series of paintings, explaining that "the research is as much a part of painting as laying the pigment down on canvas."

    • Soul Graffiti

      Savannah Now

In "Inner Visions," an exhibit of 15 recent paintings currently on display at StarLander CoffeeHouse and Gallery, she combines abstraction with graffiti, presenting an experimental series of work inspired by her studio residency in New York City. A native of Pittsburgh, James spent several months last year in New York as part of her course of study toward an masters in fine art in Painting at the Savannah College of Art and Design. "The vibrant energy of New York has fueled so many new ideas," she reports. Inspired by the urban grit and concrete labyrinth of the Big Apple, James finds remarkable beauty in the subways and streetscapes of New York, painting the city as series of psychological states framed by glowing lime orbs, dripping with white paint or adorned with a brocade of patterned symbols.
