University professor; licensed, certified SLP
I teach undergraduate and graduate courses in language content, organization, and acquisition as well as how to teach said language components. I get to do some research and writing as well. Major areas of interest in research and development include cognition and language - specifically, memory and attention and their applicability to language comprehension and use. Additionally, I have a keen interest in the development of varieties of English - Appalachian English, in particular, and the culture that permeates it.
Director
I developed and direct a new study abroad option for students interested in the history of English - specifically the history of the variety of English spoken in Appalachian region. As this accent and its grammatical and semantic history is tied, in large part, to the lowlands of Scotland, students are instructed in historical linguistics as well as in cultural history of the region and its people. Summer 2013 will be the inaugural trip!
