Data science blends the two professional areas I am most passionate about, mathematics and technology. For six years as a research mathematician, I investigated interactions between highly complex abstract mathematical systems. Now as an Allstate Data Scientist, I apply the same skills, along with statistical learning and predictive modeling tools, to investigate trends and identify opportunities within complex and quickly evolving areas of the business.
The skills below form the common threads that tie together my professional experience:
• Collaboratively tackle difficult technical questions: Collaborative technical work, either as a data scientist or research mathematician, has required refining and focusing initial questions so as to create actionable questions that lead to tangible results, balancing diverse sets of expertise within the team, and staying current with developments within the field so as to innovate previous projects and identify opportunities to apply previous work to new areas.
• Communicate technical material to diverse audiences: As a college educator, research mathematician, and now as a data scientist within a large corporation, I carefully organize, synthesize, and then communicate practical applications of technical methods, such as applications of machine learning to areas of the Allstate business, so that an audience with diverse interests can apply the results to their individual spheres of interest.
• Manage teams of student researchers: As a college educator, I managed individual and group student research teams. This required finding ways to cut to the heart of any roadblocks so as to clear away the clutter and frame the research project in a context that fit the varied skillsets within the teams.
Research Article Reviewer
Reviewed an original research article submitted to the journal The American Mathematical Monthly at the request of the publisher. Verified the logical consistency of mathematical arguments in the article, judged whether the article aligned with the stated mission of the journal, and suggested changes to correct any noted mistakes, add greater clarity to the arguments and exposition, and provide more context for the results of the article.
