Michael A. Rosenthal is currently the Grafstein Professor of Jewish Philosophy at the University of Toronto. He is appointed in the Department of Philosophy and in the Anne Tanenbaum Centre for Jewish Studies. He was formerly Professor of Philosophy (from 2003-2019) and the Samuel and Althea Stroum Chair in Jewish Studies (from 2016-2019) at the University of Washington in Seattle. He was the Chair of the Department of Philosophy at the University of Washington for five years from 2011-2016. He taught at Grinnell College from 1995 until 2003. He received his bachelors degree from Stanford University and both his masters and doctorate degrees in philosophy from the University of Chicago. He also studied at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. He teaches and publishes in the areas of Jewish philosophy, early modern philosophy, ethics, and political philosophy. He is also interested in modern German philosophy and culture. His current research focuses on the philosophy of Benedict Spinoza.
Department Chair
Responsible for administering a department within a large state university that has 5 staff, 20+ faculty (including full-time and adjunct), 25+ graduate students, 120+ undergraduate majors and 3500+ students, $4m+/year budget, and two programs/centers-- in addition to research and teaching in philosophy. In addition to personnel management, I was also involved in curriculum organization and planning, and undergraduate support services (such as the writing center). I worked actively with our advisory board (consisting of prominent alumni and friends) and I was responsible for fund-raising.

I am also interested in modern German philosophy and culture and I hold an adjunct appointment in the Department of Germanics. My current research focuses on the philosophy of Benedict Spinoza.
