Ms. Smith-Johnson was a 2008 East Baton Rouge Parish Metro Council Candidate and has several years of practical government experience. I have successfully directed and implemented grant-funded programs and have a wealth of experience in program compliance and evaluation. Published in the 2008 Race, Gender and Class Journal “Race Is On My Mind: Explaining Black Voter’s Political Attraction to Barack Obama”, Authors: Sullivan, Jas and Johnson, Melanie (2008); presented in the following conferences: Johnson, Melanie, Dr. Huey Perry, Valeria Williams (February, 2007). Black Political Organizations in New Orleans. Presented at the Southern Conference on African American Studies, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Johnson, Melanie (February, 2007); The Sociological, Psychological and Economically Impact of Hurricane Katrina on African American College Students, Baton Rouge, LA.; and conducted a panel discussion at the 2010 30th Bergamo Conference in Dayton , Ohio, titled: Is it Real or Is It Memorex: The Inclusion of Diverse Curriculum in Higher Education. I am strong advocate for helping people to become self-sustaining, productive citizens and protecting social justice issues for the public.
