  I had two main theories that guided my practice sessions: One

  that American kids don't understand how to play soccer because we don't have a robust soccer culture in this country and they don't watch enough. Two

  that another consequence of the lack of soccer culture is that American kids don't play enough pickup. This stems from a quote of the legendary Dutch player Johan Cruyff where

  to paraphrase

  he says that while he grew up training at Ajax a few times a week

  he would play in the streets for hours every day

  and that is where he really learned.\nSo my practices would always start by watching a short clip of some brilliant soccer

  then a little bit of fundamentals training

  and the bulk of the session would be left for free scrimmaging.\nI feel like it paid off when we made a deep run in the post season tournament!

  I worked under the two founders to help get this amazing film festival (now part of the Chicago Social Change Festival) off the ground. I developed a rubric for evaluating films

  watched a ton of films

  and recruited and managed the rest of the film watching committee. I also had a lot of fun emceeing some of the films at the actual festival.

  I taught pre-Calculus which may not sound too glamorous

  but I really enjoyed it. I love teaching fundamentals. The biggest challenge was that most of my students struggled with even some of the most basic elements

  and faced numerous difficulties in their life outside the classroom that made it very hard for them to focus. Some days I felt like a social worker as much as a math professor.
