The best math teacher I have ever had. He wouldn't go to the next subject until we understood and he was always available outside of class to help us. He only gave extra credit twice. Though the book and homework are optional, I strongly recommend doing the homework. He will answer any questions you have on it, plus it helps you pass the exams.
