The goal of this study was to contribute to the limited body of research on experienced teachers and their commitment to remain in the profession. Through observation and interview the methodological intention was to enter the world of the subjects, ascertain and gain insight into their experience and how they structured the social world in which they construct their personal and professional lives (Bogdan & Bilken, 1992). The participants in this study, teachers with 15 or more years of teaching experience, were drawn from public high schools in New York City. The purpose of this study was to explore their endurance and professional commitment to remain in teaching, their capacity to remain fresh and invested over time, and the possible role of other education stakeholders in creating a climate that nurtures the commitment to teach.
