and Technologies of the Self: The Making of Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy\" in 2013.\n\nMy research employs theories of how media configure the agency and identity of users to analyze what I call technologies of therapeutic mediation—devices designed to make subjective experience available for therapeutic re-working. A wealth of scholarship has analyzed the role of medical imaging technology in constructing selves

the use of media technology in psychotherapeutic practice remains an understudied topic. In investigating this area

I have chosen to focus particularly on Virtual Iraq/Afghanistan

a virtual reality system designed to aid therapists in treating military service members suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. The research draws on over a year of ethnographic fieldwork in the MedVR Lab of the Institute for Creative Technologies at the University of Southern California

attendance at “cybertherapy” conferences and clinical training sessions

    interviews with therapists

and textual analysis of both popular and scientific representations.
