Awesome
Professor Apichella is amazing, she works hard to help all her students succeed and isn't a hard grader. In order for students to feel comfortable in her class, Apichella breaks down the great and interesting stories she chooses to write about. She also makes herself available via email to answer questions within minutes.

My doctorate ‘Psalmody: Poetry and Critical Commentary’ is a creative and critical work exploring the influence of the Psalms in relation to contemporary poetry. My own collection is followed by a critical analysis of the Psalms
a study of a sequence of poems from Michael Symmons Robert’s Drysalter
and a review of my own poetic approach. \n\nThe first section of the critical commentary draws on the studies of Hermann Gunkel and Sigmund Mowinckel in relation to classification
authorship and poetic language. Applying the insights of modern theorists
I show how metaphor is best understood by relating to human experiences of body
food and location. I support this analysis with a close reading of Psalms 1 and 19. \n\nThe second section presents the influence of the Psalms on a contemporary poet who is also a Christian. Drysalter explicitly draws on the Psalms
and is both a critical and artistic success
suggesting that poetry engaging with the Psalms can still make a valuable contribution to the contemporary literary scene
even in a largely secular culture. \n\nIn the final section
I show how I have engaged on a parallel path to that of Roberts
trying to create poetry that speaks of faith in a lyrical but not purely personal voice. I address the wider scope of my influences including poets Alicia Ostriker
Anne Carson
Deryn Rees-Jones
Tiffany Atkinson and Kathryn Maris. Finally
I show what I have learned from the Psalms during this process: that their themes of communal praise and celebration combined with personal introspection and questioning can be successfully adapted to the purposes of contemporary poetry.
