Effective Business English Communication Course
Designer and Coach
I designed and taught a 10-session Effective Business English course. My colleague and I worked with project managers and programmers who recently transferred from China to the Chicago office of their financial organization. After surveying their needs and interests
we developed a series of exercises to increase their confidence to negotiate
agree and disagree with colleagues
engage socially in the office
present effectively
and articulate clearly. The students requested a continuation of the course
and we are excited to develop another course.
Incorporating English in the Core Curriculum
Presenter
Jubilee Centers International
Tegucigalpa
Honduras\n\nThis workshop energized Honduran elementary school teachers to blend English language experiences into their existing Spanish core curriculum. I demonstrated English language daily routine songs
mathematics practice
thematic literature studies
and cultural explorations that could be used to intensify English language exposure without a dedicated English as a foreign language class.
Embedding Workforce Preparation in Your Class Atmosphere
Presenter
College of DuPage ESL Instructor Workshop\n\nThis presentation described how to embed professional expectations and courtesy
time management
materials organization approaches
and transferable-skill awareness in an adult ESL class atmosphere. The passing of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) legislation means that a key outcome for our students will be to gain employment or advance in their jobs. This is a heavy responsibility for the ESL instructor
and our response cannot simply be to add more workplace practice activities to our curriculum. We articulated how
then
we can adjust our classroom routines so that students adapt skills essential to success in the U.S. workforce.

ITBE Convention Presentation\nCollege of DuPage ESL Instructor In-Service Workshop\n\nOur presentation articulated the diversity in the adult ESL classroom and highlighted student cultural values that western educators may not immediately recognize. While addressing student motivation and persistence
we offered a variety of class activities and teacher habits that complement the mandated content.
