Modeling and Validation of Basic Cellular Metabolism in Spheroids Used for Scaffold-Free 3D Bioprinting
Cell spheroids are microscopic aggregates of cells used as ‘building blocks’ for the creation of higher-order 3D structures
an extremely powerful approach to tissue engineering. The goal is to determine the optical spheroid properties for bioprinting through mathematical and computer-assisted modeling.
Increasing Post Mortem Interval Predictions Using Sex Markers in Phormia regina
Forensic scientists use its Phormia regina larvae to approximate post mortem interval. Variation in their development cycle between sexes and a lack of phenotypical sex markers in the larvae limits the accuracy of PMI approximation. The primary goal of this project was to find a genetic sex marker in P. regina. Secondary to this was the prediction of genes and the research of their homologues. Two P. regina contigs were used for each sex to find predicted genes and to design PCR primers. The primers were built to amplify possible sex marker loci. The PCR products were then aligned to analyze the loci for sex markers. The first pair of contigs had one gene predicted across both sexes and the sequence alignment results were inconclusive. The second pair had one male gene and one gene across both sexes and the alignment results did not find a sex marker.\n
