    Accommodating Differences

Creating informative and appealing course materials that are accessible for everyone may seem like a daunting task; however

it does not need to be. This article provides brief descriptions of some common disabilities as well as associated basic accommodations for each. The use of technology with certain disabilities will also be touched upon. \n\nThe disabilities and impairments included in this article are Learning Differences

Attention Deficit Disorder/Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADD/ADHD)

    Visual Impairments

    Hearing Impairments

and Physical/Mobility Impairments. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services

a disability is defined as a limitation to the normal physical

    mental

or social activity of an individual. Disabilities may be of varying types (functional

    occupational

    and learning)

    degrees (partial or total)

and durations (temporary or permanent). An impairment is a loss or abnormality of psychological

    physiological

    or anatomical function. \n\nIn general

helping students who are disabled is not difficult unto itself. As with all teaching

knowing your audience is vital to success. Students who are disabled are fully aware of their disability and also know what does and does not work for them. The best way to help students is to ask them.\n\nFollowing accessible design principles benefits everyone. How can you design instruction to maximize the learning for all students? The field of universal design can provide a starting point for developing an inclusive model for instruction. Please see the follow-up article in the next issue\n

    Accommodating Differences

    Cultural

    educational

and legal changes have significantly altered the mix of students in traditional classrooms. The challenge posed by greater diversity and greater accountability is to enable students with widely divergent needs

    skills

and interests to attain the same high standards. It is impractical

    if not impossible

to design everything so that it is accessible by all; however

for most types or degrees of impairment there are simple and low cost (or no cost) adaptations to product designs that can significantly increase their accessibility and usefulness. Insights garnered from the field of universal design may be applied to transform the pressures of diversity into opportunities for all learners.

Applying Universal Design Concepts to Higher Education

    Isleb

My role as an ID: colleague first and foremost. Guide and mentor. With carefully crafted rubrics and support materials

my role is greatly simplified. They provide me with an objective method to ascertain completeness and design of instruction. I work from a Backwards Design model with heavy emphasis on connection to Learning Objectives. Every item/assignment/discussion must be able to be tied back to at least one of the Learning Objectives. \n\nI also pursue accessibility of all resources to the best of my ability. There are times when triage is all you can do

    especially with inherited course materials

but you can still make in-roads and improvements. A universally designed course benefits everyone.\n\nI believe that my teaching greatly benefits my ability to provide instructional design assistance. I have taught Computer Science

    Management Science

and Instructional Design/Technology courses for over 20 years.\n
