Nurse Education Today
Recent literature suggests that a shortage of nursing faculty is imminent. The purpose of this paper is to examine succession planning as one viable solution to the shortage of nursing faculty and the role of nurses who enter into masters and doctoral studies early in their careers can play. By examining the factors contributing to this shortage and exploring a succession planning model an argument will be made in favor of early-career nurses pursuing graduate education with the intention of becoming faculty. Recommendations from the literature will be given including the creation of academic practice positions with the aim of increasing awareness of how to better encourage early-career nurses to pursue higher education, and therefore sustain adequate numbers of nursing faculty.
