Popular literature is inundated with studies of the assassinations of leaders such as John F. Kennedy and Abraham Lincoln and most empirical studies of assassinations focus on the murders of heads of state
such as presidents and prime ministers. Missing from the literature is an in-depth and systematic examination of assassination types and the immediate
intermediate and long-term effects of these events on the states that experience these events. My dissertation contributes to the existing literature by examining political institutional changes in the aftermath of assassination events. The central purpose is to determine if assassinations lead to immediate and/or long-term political instability
using event history modeling to test for length of time from an assassination event to an institutional change. By broadening the scope of research into political assassinations and examining the repercussions of these events
scholars will improve insight and overall understanding of political violence.
