University of Illinois Chicago - German
On 10 March
Germany’s Pro7 TV aired a story about U.S. “po” model Temeca Freeman in New York City for Fashion Week. As a butt model
Freeman voluntarily welcomes people to stare unabashedly at her backside. But Pro7’s story went beyond a curious stare and into a visual “fressen” – a German term which means to devour
or consume like an animal.
“A Posterior for Posterity: A Black American Butt Model on German Network TV.”
I contend that black women become visually disassociated from the ideal image of “American” female personhood by means of their portrayal in the U.S. media
which
I will show
makes it difficult for viewers to empathize and identify with black American women.

I argue that gatekeepers in the Academy create and perpetuate 'white spaces' in which Scholars of Color are marginalized and exploited. These white spaces can be intentional or accidental but the end result is often the same: isolation and a reduction in opportunities for professional advancement. Employing autoethnography from my professional experiences in Germany and the United States
as well as rhetorical theory and critical race theory
I advocate for an honest audit of the Academy.
