Blinn College - Chemistry
Natural Science Department - Blinn college
Brenham
Texas
I teach introductory and general chemistry classes as well as chemistry for engineers. I served as division chair for the Brenham
Schulenburg and Sealy campuses from August 1983 until May 2014. I also served on the Curriculum Committee and the Council of Divisions. I am a faculty co-sponsor of the MEDS Club for students pursuing health related careers. We bring in guest speakers and conduct field trips to hospitals.
Educator
Blinn College
I teach both lecture and laboratory components of each class. As DC I evaluate the faculty
the ADC and the science lab coordinator
manage the budget and promote student recruitment and retention.

Health hazards from oil
soot and metals at a hot forging operation
A. H. Goldsmith was the principal author with four coauthors including myself. I reported the presence of the carcinogen benzo[a]pyrene which I found in the air samples collected at the hot forging operation. I also performed the separation and quantitative analysis of benzo[a]pyrene found in the samples.

and I (Welch postdoctoral fellow) were the checkers to assure that the synthesis reported by I. Haiduc
and C. Silvestru was reproducible.

Chemistry Prof. Leon Zalkow
Georgia Institute of Technology
was the principal investigator. Coauthors included Ronnie Hale
Pierre Crabbe and myself. Hale discovered an error in work reported by Prof. Zalkow's former research director
Carl Djerassi. We used anhydrous alcoholic solutions since water in the concentrated hydrochloric acid used as a catalyst in the earlier published research caused the data to be flawed.
A New Circular Dichroism Study of Ketal Formation of Some Steroidal Ketones
Texas A&M University Chemistry Prof. Kurt Irgolic and I were coauthors with other principal authors in that we synthesized
purified and provided a selenophene and tellurophene for spectral analysis.

The use of very small amounts of chemical solutions onto plastic surfaces offers promise in the reductions of waste and exposure to harmful chemicals. At the same time
it allows students to work right in the classroom without danger. This permits the instructor to lead them step by step through their observations thus making the critical connection between what they see and what it means in chemical terms.
Adapting Small-Scale Chemistry Concepts
Georgia Tech Chemistry Prof. Leon Zalkow was the principal author. Other coauthors included J.B. Nabors
S. C. Bisarya and myself
a graduate student. This product helped some other groups to complete the synthesis of camptothecin
a compound found to have anti-tumor activity in animals
using our intermediate. Danishefsky was the first to do so
but without using this intermediate in his total synthesis
by which his group confirmed the x-ray crystallographically-determined structure of camptothecin.
