Sacred Places
A PhotoVoice Study
The purpose of this project is to examine the relationship between an individual and their natural
social
and built environments as interpreted through faith. We believe that by having a greater understanding of how individuals interpret their surroundings through their faith
we may be better able to assess which types of landscapes or landscape features should be preserved and how to better design public spaces to increase community well-being. \n

Voices from Small Places
This project focuses on documenting and preserving the history of small places (population under 100) found throughout East Texas. It uses a unique combination of methods to create a multidimensional history including photovoice
oral history interviews
a site survey
and the development of a digital collection. Using these methods the history of these small communities is documented and made available to the public. In addition to providing information for research
by documenting the history of these small places and placing them back into the larger historical narrative
East Texas is better understood as a region.\n

Public Art of Nacogdoches
Texas
My current project involves the examination of the public art of Nacogdoches
Texas
specifically the bronze statuary. I am particularly interested in how the statues reflect a shift in the presentation of the historical narrative of Nacogdoches
Texas.
Public Art in Small Towns
This project focuses on documenting the various forms of public art found in small towns in East Texas. Different forms of public art are found in small towns ranging from monuments
memorials
and murals. The focus here is not only documentation
but also assembling the narratives of the public art and what these tell us about the towns and their history.
Center for Social Science Research
I am a historical geographer with a strong emphasis in the history of cartography and cartographic analysis. In addition to my work at the Center for Social Science Research (CSSR) at The University of Texas at Tyler (Tyler
Texas)
I am contributing writer to The Daily Yonder
an online journal devoted to issues in rural America. \n\nAs a research associate at the CSSR I am involved in a wide variety of research projects. However
although my research interests are broad
there are common themes (or questions) which unite my projects. These are (1) how can we better understand how people engage and dialog with their surroundings
and (2) how can we use this increased understanding to help in the identification of landscapes or landscape features that should be preserved and documented. \n\nWhile I do pursue individual research
my preference is to work with people outside my area as part of a multi-disciplinary team. Such an approach brings together different skill sets united in their application towards a common goal. It is my belief that such an approach ultimately leads to a richer understanding of the research problem
or question
and thus makes a greater contribution to all the disciplines involved.
