COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Familiarize students with a working laboratory, its regulations and some basic protocol use and execution. This course will be conducted in a working laboratory (not a classroom setting). This is a "hands-on" course designed to acquaint each student with the regulatory entities at Emory University, the techniques, and instrumentation utilized in a Behavioral Neuroscience laboratory. Several “representative” experiments will be conducted. Students will learn to handle and inject a rat, will conduct a basic behavioral test, will perfuse an animal in order to harvest the brain, will harvest the brain, will perform washes that are representative of an immunohistochemical assay, will learn basic histology (slicing, mounting, staining), and prepare a poster that will present the results of their techniques. Students also will learn to plan experiments, organize their notes and electronic files, create a basic protocol, and edit protocols.
