Biography

University of Nevada Reno - Geology

Geologist. Stratigraphic analysis to solve energy resource and environmental problems.
Oil & Energy
Karen
Loomis
Reno, Nevada
I have a passion for all things related to the Earth Sciences, and have spent my professional career as a petroleum geologist, lithium explorer, environmental scientist, and instructor.

My field research has taken me to the tops of 14,000-ft peaks, and to the bottoms of ancient oceans. I dig deep to find sources of energy and to solve environmental problems by merging the disciplines of stratigraphy, sedimentology, and depositional systems analysis while using cutting-edge subsurface exploration techniques.

My detailed stratigraphic analyses in the shallow subsurface (for lithium exploration, studies on groundwater and soil contamination, and water resource studies), and in the deep subsurface (for petroleum exploration) are complemented by my geologic mapping, both in the surface and subsurface. I perform quick-look analyses or more extensive regional studies, to match the needs of my client.

In conjunction with my geologic career, I have exercised my entrepreneurial spirit by owning and managing two businesses (unrelated to geology) over the past 15 years.

I am interested in discussing projects, whether to explore for petroleum and other natural resources, to solve environmental problems, or to promote earth science and outdoor education.

Specialties:
Sedimentary basin analysis, stratigraphy, sedimentology, depositional systems analysis, reservoir characterization, subsurface analysis (subsurface mapping and correlation), seismic stratigraphy, sequence stratigraphy, environmental site assessment and remediation, hydrostratigraphic analysis, geologic mapping, project management, course development and instruction for classroom and field seminars.

Workstation Interpretation Experience:
Petra, SeisWorks (2D & 3D), StratWorks, Geographix, Geoquest, Stratlog, Construct.

    Consulting Geologist

I solve energy resource and environmental problems by applying my technical skills in sedimentary basin analysis (stratigraphic analysis, depositional systems analysis, subsurface correlation and mapping). I perform quick-look analyses or more extensive studies, to match the needs of my client. Organized in thought, presentation, and project execution. Broad experience base.

My most recent work involves exploration for lithium-enriched brine in Nevada.

    Other recent consulting projects include:
Oil & gas exploration and prospect generation in the Permian Basin, including conventional and unconventional plays, utilizing Petra; Assessed the hydrocarbon potential of a shale resource play in Nevada by evaluating petroleum geochemistry data; Provided detailed subsurface stratigraphic correlations of an alluvial unit using borings and e-logs to assist in the interpretation of DNAPL groundwater contamination; Completed a regional stratigraphic study and hydrocarbon evaluation of the Elko Formation in Nevada, which included the chronostratigraphy, paleogeography, and the tectonic evolution and tectonostratigraphy of the Elko lacustrine basin.

Geographic Areas of Oil & Gas Experience:
Gulf of Mexico (shelf and deep water); North Slope of Alaska; West Texas and New Mexico (Permian Basin); New Mexico (San Juan Basin); onshore California (San Joaquin Basin); offshore California (Point Arena Basin, Santa Barbara Basin); Nevada (Elko Basin, Bull Run Basin); offshore Vietnam (Mekong Basin); Indonesia; Sulu Sea, Philippines (Sandakan Basin); offshore West Africa (deep-water exploration, offshore Gabon).

Experienced in the Following Oil & Gas Play Types:
Deep marine (including deep-water turbidites; submarine fan systems; salt-induced intraslope basins; shale plays); siliciclastic shelf; carbonate shelf (algal mounds, carbonate shoals); fluvial (incised valleys).

Lithium exploration in Nevada. Integration of subsurface analyses (including well logs and geophysical surveys) with geologic field studies to develop a reservoir model, an innovative exploration model, and exploration targets for lithium-enriched brine. This is the largest lithium exploration project in Nevada, consisting of 1,796 placer mining claims on BLM leaseholds, and spanning 56.25 square miles (36,000 acres).

  • University of Nevada, Reno

Instructor of Geology 202 (Sedimentology and Stratigraphy) for Geology, Hydrogeology, Geophysics, and Geological Engineering majors.
GEOL 202 is an introduction to sedimentary rocks, sedimentary processes, fluid dynamics, and the principles of stratigraphy, including dating, correlation, sequence stratigraphy, and reconstruction of past depositional environments.

Comments from my GEOL 202 students:

    - "Dr. Loomis was seriously the best professor I've ever had."
    - “One of Dr. Loomis’ greatest strengths is her extensive field experience. She has spent many years in industry, and is therefore able to provide real-world examples about how what we are learning can be applied.”
    - “Absolutely one of the best professors I’ve ever had. Not only is she knowledgeable on the subject, she also helps with job advice within the field, which is amazing.”
    - “Dr. Loomis is the best geologic science teacher I have ever had. She structures her class in a way where it is evident that she wants you to learn and understand the material. Dr. Loomis also is very approachable in her office hours. I know I won’t forget the contents of this class due to her excellent teaching methods and her well-constructed slides.”

  • U.S. Forest Service

Skied the mountain and interacted with patrons to answer questions about Snow Valley and the environment (e.g., forest, geology). Also acted as a liaison between the ski patrol and skiers/snowboarders to provide assistance if needed.

  • Heart of the Valley Animal Shelter

Socialized cats that were being offered for adoption. I also kept them warm in outdoor cages in the dead of winter in Bozeman, Montana, where I mastered the art of holding three cats at one time.

  • Geologic map of the Kreyenhagen Hills - Sunflower (McLure) Valley area, Fresno, Kern, Kings, and Monterey Counties, California

Geological Society of America Map and Chart Series MCH074

Scale 1:24,000, 4 sheets. See link to USGS National Geologic Map Database for mapped area. This geologic map is, in part, a result of my Ph.D. research, where I mapped approximately 58 square miles on the west side of the San Joaquin Valley of California. Geologic mapping provided the context for measuring stratigraphic sections (8,000 ft of vertical section), analyzing the stratigraphy and sedimentology, determining the age of the rocks by mapping and dating volcanic tuffs, and for collecting rock and fossil samples. The purpose of my Ph.D. research was to reconstruct the depositional systems, tectonics and sedimentation, and paleoecology of the west-central San Joaquin Basin during late Miocene to Pliocene time.
