Awful

I was in what I believe to be Professor Nummi's first class, she was working on her PhD I think. Her lectures were confusing, most of the time I thought I was understanding but then when I took the exams I had no idea what the questions meant. You have to read the textbook thoroughly and make sure to take extremely good notes. Honestly, I didn't enjoy this class.

Chapter 16: Women’s Leadership In Texas Forest Fires And Recovery: How Gender Roles and Assumptions Empower and Constrain Women and Men Post-Disaster in a Rural Southern Town

Book Chapter in Responses to Disasters and Climate Change: Understanding Vulnerability and Fostering Resilience\nThis chapter analyzes the ways in which gender and gender assumptions empower and constrain women and men during and in the aftermath of the 2011 Bastrop County Complex Wildfires. Based on over 100 interviews and three years of participant observation

this research uses grounded theory to voice and analyze the perspectives of fire survivors. Women took leadership roles in this southern

    conservative

rural community through a variety of service organizations

while simultaneously rebuilding and reprovisioning for their own families. In the private sphere

women's voices and labor potential were often ignored or discouraged. Men

    too

    were constrained by gender assumptions

as they dealt with inability to accept needed help or to express extreme emotions. Analysis of the ways in which gender roles and gender assumptions on the part of organizations and individuals both facilitated and hampered short- and long-term fire response suggests changing tensions in gender roles and policy implications.
