I obtained by Ph.D. in organic chemistry at the University of Iowa in 2011. My research focused on the use of supramolecular chemistry to form organic-semiconductor co-crystals. Co-crystals were formed utilizing O-H---N synthons between a resorcinol based co-crystal former and oligothiophenes capped with pyridine groups. The purpose of the co-crystal former was to adjust the solid-state packing of the oligothiophene to a conformation ideal for charge transport. During this research I gained experience in the synthesis, separations and purification of organic molecules, as well as crystal growth, and various spectroscopy techniques. From this research I have an expertise in intermolecular interactions and this research has yielded to several publications which can found in my CV. Besides my graduate work, I worked in a government laboratory (PNNL) as a summer intern focusing on the formation and use of metal-organic frameworks for the purpose of gas storage.
Since I have obtained my Ph.D. I have taught chemistry courses at Luther College and Kansas State University. I was drawn to teaching because I wanted to help students achieve their career goals. I have taught organic chemistry as a year long course as well as a one semester prep course for biochemistry. Besides organic chemistry I have taught several general chemistry courses. During my time teaching I have improved my communication skills and increased my knowledge chemistry.
