My primary interests focus on the molecular genetics and evolution of ancient and symbiosis-related gene sequences in marine organisms. This began with the study of feline nuclear mitochondrial (Numt) DNA sequences that arose from a nuclear transposition and amplification event. Randomly amplified sequences were used to differentiate sibling species in the Montastraea scleractinian coral complex. Ribosomal RNA gene sequences have also been used to characterized the microbial symbiont diversity within various marine sponges. Transcriptome analysis is now being applied to characterize sponge- microbe ecology and interactions\n\nSpecialties: molecular biology
