My projected consisted of computing the niche space and dietary overlap of the two- Choloepus hoffmanni and three-toed Bradypus variegatus sloths. The work was conducted in an organic cacao farm located in northeast Costa Rica
which is fragmented into three major habitats; cacao farm
riparian forests and pastures which is surrounded by monocultures. I used observational data
spatial and molecular tools
to quantify niche size and overlap of these two species in a fragmented ecosystem. (Advisers
Dr. Jonathan Pauli and Dr. Zachariah Peery).

Enterococcus faecalis has the ability to grow in adverse environments
including an innate and acquired resistance to multiple antibiotics. The ability to survive the oxidative burst of non-professional phagocytic cells during infections is considered a key virulence attribute of E. faecalis. The Spx global regulator has been shown to function as a positive transcriptional activator of oxidative stress genes in Gram-positive bacteria. I investigated the role of Spx in stress tolerance and virulence of E. faecalis and my work in the Δspx strain will help identify the genetic network under Spx control and to evaluate the role of Spx in virulence using a non-mammalian model. Different molecular and genetic approaches were implemented for this project including deletion of spx coding region using a markerless genetic exchange system. In addition a combination of in vitro and in vivo methods were used to characterize the Δspx strain. (Mentor Dr. Jose Lemos).

Provide students with basic needs and academic assistance in order to help them graduate high school and succeed in life. Some of the activities included
introducing students to critical thinking by teaching different areas of science (e.g. biology
microbiology
neuroscience
physics and engineering concepts) through lessons
videos
invited scientists
and by building robots and hands on projects. In addition
I have provided mentorship to students in scientific research that includes areas in ecology
conservation and evolution by using software to analyze genetic sequences. Workshops to the students of the Garden City Alternative Education Center are also provided with the aim to provide enrichment and improve communication skills in oral and written mediums. Additionally
