Albuquerque, New Mexico Area
As an enrolled member of the Grand Portage Band of the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe, my scholarship seeks to instill our philosophical traditions of knowledge and sense-making through lifelong learning pedagogies. This stance is rooted in the knowledge that—amidst shifting demographics in the U.S.—we can no longer assume that previous skills and cultural norms will serve our students, who struggle to fit new identities against existing perceptions. In order to graduate students who can generate successful solutions that meet the demands of the current human ecology, different approaches to achieve success among these diverse social needs are required.
Bachelor of Arts (BA)
Media Arts
The Department of Cinematic Arts is dedicated to the study and practice of film and video as art. In the hope of understanding and enhancing the immense role of film and video in the modern world, the program offers the student a broad foundation in the purposes of art and culture. Although one may study film and video for commercial purposes with little commitment to artistic and cultural standards, in the Department of Cinematic Arts, as in the College of Fine Arts, aesthetic criteria prevail. The Bachelor of Arts degree in Media Arts provides a liberal arts background which will enable the student to pursue further education and professional training.
Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)
Organizational, Information & Learning Science (OILS)
The OILS program is based on a belief that learning is a life-long process, which is stimulated by active participation, a respect for the individual's past experiences and diversity, critical reflection, and dialogue. The OILS program prepares professionals to help individuals, groups, and organizations learn in more effective ways. In light of the massive and continuous change organizations experience, it is imperative that graduates of our program be ready to not only manage change, but lead future change efforts as well. To this end, we strive to develop a community of learners who build motivation for learning in their own organizations. The OILS program focuses on the design, development, delivery, and evaluation of training, organization development, knowledge management, distance education, e-learning, and instructional technology systems, methods and strategies with the intent of improving human performance.
Master of Community & Regional Planning (MCRP)
City/Urban, Community and Regional Planning
The MCRP degree is designed to allow students to pursue a concentration consistent with their professional objectives. The physical planning concentration is designed for students who are interested in the built landscape of cities and towns, including the design of neighborhoods, cities, regions, and public spaces; land use planning and growth management; the planning of transportation and other infrastructure; and development of housing and other projects. It prepares students for professional careers in local government agencies, regional agencies, private sector consulting firms, and nonprofit organizations. Classes offer skills of analyzing local codes and regulations, understanding urban design strategies and traditions, developing written planning documents and graphic materials, and working with a variety of constituencies to fulfill community goals related to physical planning and design.
