My overall work attempts to maintain the traditional position of the teacher-scholar, through both active engagement with my students, and through efforts towards rigorous scholarship in my areas of interest/expertise. These areas broadly include social theory, social psychology, the history of social thought. However, my current project has been directed towards developing a general theory of the role of human empathy in the formation and maintenance of social forms and institutions. This has led me to explore diverse areas of research in sociology, anthropology, economics, biology, social affective neuroscience, communication, and evolutionary psychology. While I principally identify as a sociologist, my interests frequently take me far afield of my standard sociological training.
I also work to promote the cause of public sociology, and public intellectual engagement with fields beyond academic institutions; including, but not limited to: community organizations, local and city governments, corporate accountability, and social movement organizations.
