Awful
Professor Hayes is very difficult to understand, he mumbles and stutters a lot. We had four graded assignments that were all exams. We used three textbooks but he would never tell us when we needed to use them.
Awful
I am in the class now, and it has been possibly my worst class in all of college. While he cares about climate issues, he has no idea how he is supposed to be teaching the subject. The only class grades are the tests. Awful teacher, I'm having a hard time figuring out how I'm supposed to pass this.
Awful
I am already considering withdrawing even though I haven't finished this course yet. He knows his stuff but he doesn't know how to teach it. He is very confusing and he doesn't stay on topic. He has no syllabus being followed and he also cannot follow along. Grades only come from three exams. I wouldn't recommend taking him.
Awful
I'm taking GPH 282P with Prof. Hayes and I really hate it! I would withdraw from this class if I could. He simply lectures alone and he's rude if you ask him questions. He also goes off topic a lot. I actually have reached out to multiple people in class and no one really knows what is going on. Grades only come from 4 things-- exams. I honestly don't think I will pass this class at all. I wouldn't recommend taking him.
Awesome
I realize a few people need to state he's the hardest educator out there, yet if you're not up for the challenge it's possible college isn't for you. I believe he's amazing and love his "gee whizzes'. I took in a great deal from him and consider him to be a future mentor, and plan to take each course he educates while at SSU.
Awful
Professor Hayes is very stubborn. He's not willing to compromise or to be lenient with any work. He's not helpful at all. I would rate him a zero if possible. Do not take his class.
Awful
Professor Hayes' class is the worst that I've ever had. He doesn't slow down and asks if everyone understands. His class consists of tests for the whole semester. Work doesn't make sense in his class. He's way into what he teaches and thinks everyone should just know what he's talking about. This is the worst decision I made in college. I suggest that you do not take his class.
Awful
Professor Hayes' class is lecture-heavy. The exams were very difficult. Honestly, I had to see a tutor two times a week for this class, which is the only thing that helped me to get a good grade.
Awful
Do not sign up for this course. The professor lacked patience and made unsupportive remarks on my midterm exam like this isn't rocket science. Still, only two students managed to pass out of the whole class. His teaching methods can be perplexing and ineffective. I honestly wouldn't suggest him as a professor. Overall, he's a cranky, ineffective teacher.

I currently research climate action planning
climate change adaptation planning
and sustainability planning by cities and towns. I have been involved in mathematical crop yield and crop water use modeling for agro-climate impact studies for over 30 years. My most recent Master's student used the CERES-Maize model to simulate the impacts of climate change on maize yield for selected locations across East Africa. I am working to get digital copies of my publications available for uploading via ResearchGate. I am in my 9th year of serving on the city of Salem's Renewable Energy Task Force. From 2012-2014 I served on the city of Salem's Climate Change Adaptation Advisory Group which worked with CDM Smith to develop a CCA Plan for the city.
