Biography

Duquesne University - Communication

Category II Lecturer in Rhetoric and Debate at Metropolitan State University of Denver
John
Rief
Denver, Colorado
John is a teacher-scholar invested in educating students about the ancient and powerfully important art of rhetoric, especially as a means to enhance their professional and civic lives. He lives in Englewood, Colorado.

From 2000-2005, he was a student at Regis Jesuit University, completing BAs in Philosophy and Communication. He was also a member of Regis' nationally competitive debate team, reaching the elimination rounds of several major tournaments including the National Debate Tournament.

He completed his PhD in Communication (2012) and MA in Bioethics (2013) at the University of Pittsburgh. While completing his degree, John coached (and, for one year, was the associate director of) the policy debate program in the William Pitt Debating Union. After the completion of his PhD, he was admitted into the RAND-University of Pittsburgh Scholars program.

In 2014, John joined the faculty in the Department of Communication & Rhetorical Studies at Duquesne University as a Visiting Assistant Professor (2014-2016) and then TT Assistant Professor (2016-2019). There, he taught a variety of courses including the history of communication, public speaking, organizational communication, and health communication. He was also the advisor (2014-2016) and then Senior Debate Consultant (2016-2019) for the Duquesne Debating Society. He recently resigned from Duquesne to move closer to family.

In July 2019, John accepted a new position at Metropolitan State University of Denver (MSU Denver). He is a Category II Lecturer in Rhetoric and Debate. He will teach in the Department of Communication Studies and work with the department to relaunch MSU Denver's debate program.

John’s research focuses on the history of rhetoric, the history of intercollegiate academic debate, and the rhetoric of medicine. His scholarship has recently appeared in Health Communication, Speaker & Gavel, and the selected works volumes of the AFA/NCA (Alta) conference.
