Dissertation explored the potential for inefficiencies to develop in financial markets. Tested relative performance of \"good\" versus \"bad\" news portfolios and explored implications for standard model views of how financial markets price assets. On a risk-adjusted basis
the \"bad\" news portfolio (taking a long position when news was on average negative) statistically outperformed the \"good\" news portfolio (taking a long position when news was on average positive). A quantitative news variable was constructed to perform the testing
and the long positions taken were based on investing in one S&P 500 futures contract.
