Western Illinois University - English
Fertile Ground brings to light a little-known aspect of American history. The internment of Japanese Americans on the west coast during WW II is common knowledge; however
what is less known is that the same law
specifically the Enemy Alien Act
mandated the registration of thousands of ethnic Germans and Italians
many of which were interned in camps across the country for the duration of the war. The novel depicts one family's struggle with this government policy. Ultimately
it's an historical novel that is particularly relevant to post-9/11 American society.
